A CITY RESONDS TO CRISIS: VOLUNTEERS AND THE HIV AND AIDS EPIDEMIC IN SYDNEY 1980s-1990s

Thu 29 Nov – Tue 11 Dec | M2 Gallery, Shop 4/450 Elizabeth St, Surry Hills
    1pm-5pm Mon-Fri, 12pm-2pm Sat-Sun | A late night opening will be held on Fri 7 Dec 5pm-7pm

This historical exhibition, sponsored by the City of Sydney and run in partnership with ACON, showcases the contribution of volunteers in responding to the HIV and AIDS crisis of the 1980s and early 1990s in the city of Sydney. Volunteers were critical to Australia’s world-leading response to the epidemic, yet their contribution has yet to receive the recognition it deserves. Many individuals from diverse and marginalised backgrounds, including members of the LGBTIQ community, sex workers, injecting drug users and people living with HIV and AIDS, played a crucial role at an immensely difficult time. Drawing on a wide variety of rich archival material, visual imagery, film and personal records this exhibition draws attention to their extraordinary contribution.
